One Powerball ticket sold in Los Angeles matching all six numbers to win the $1.08 billion jackpot
One Powerball ticket sold in Los Angeles matching all six numbers to win the $1.08 billion jackpot
Neither the owner nor owners of the $1.08 billion winning ticket in Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing, which was sold at a Los Angeles convenience store, received the prize, which is among the largest in the game’s history.
The winning numbers were 7, 13, 10, 24 and 11 and the Power Ball was 24.
The lucky ticket holder will have the choice between an annual prize paid in installments over 29 years worth $1.08 billion, or a lump sum payment of $558.1 million, before taxes, according to Powerball.
Wednesday’s jackpot ranks as the sixth largest US lottery jackpot and the third largest Powerball jackpot, behind last year’s world record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot in California, and the $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot in 2016, according to The Lottery.
The winning ticket was sold Wednesday at Las Palmitas Mini Market in downtown Los Angeles, according to the California Lottery. The convenience store will receive close to $1 million for the sale of the winning ticket.
Angelica Menjivar, whose mother owns the shop, told reporters that they are happy with the reward but have no plans yet on how to spend it.
Nabor Herrera, who works at the shop, learned the market had sold the winning ticket as he arrived at work Thursday morning, his car surrounded by reporters.
“I didn’t know,” he said, “now I find out when they surround me.” “They didn’t want to let me park my car.”
He said that three of Herrera’s customers had bought a large share of the tickets, and he hoped the winner would be one of his regular customers. He was anxious to check two tickets of his own that he had bought.
He said: “Blessed, thank God, I won one of them.” “We also get a little.”
Herrera was initially identified as the owner; A lottery spokesperson told CNN after the press conference that he was an employee.
In California, Powerball jackpot winners have one year to claim their prize. They have 60 days after their claim is validated to choose the payout they want.
Although one ticket wins the jackpot, players are advised to check their tickets in case they win one of the other seven types of jackpots ranging from $4 to $2 million (depending on state lottery rules).
The state’s public school system was another winner.
“The lottery has raised nearly $80 million for public schools from this one game,” said California Lottery spokeswoman Caroline Baker.
In addition to Wednesday’s big winner, 36 tickets in 16 states matching all five white balls to win $1 million in prizes were sold in most states, according to a Powerball news release. Seven of those tickets were sold in California, where the prizes will be $448,750, according to the California Lottery website. Non-jackpot jackpots in California vary depending on the number of winners and ticket sales, and will therefore differ from the fixed prizes offered on the Powerball website.
Powerball says on its website that the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.
Prior to Wednesday’s win, there had been 38 consecutive draws without a jackpot winner since the April 19 Powerball draw, when a ticket in Ohio matched all six numbers to win a $252.6 million jackpot.
“Congratulations to the latest Powerball and California Lottery jackpot winner!” said Drew Svetko, President, Powerball Product Group and CEO of the Pennsylvania Lottery. “For more than 30 years, Powerball has brought people together to dream big and win big, and in doing so have raised billions of dollars for good causes powered by lotteries.”
Last year, a lone winning ticket — also in California — hit the $2.04 billion Powerball lottery jackpot. As a result, the owner of the gas station that sold the winning ticket became a millionaire himself.
For those who didn’t become millionaires immediately on Wednesday, there might still be hope: the Mega Millions chart. The Mega Millions jackpot on Friday is around $720 million, with a cash value of $369.6 million.
